The Passing of the Farm
The history of the abandoned farm of New England is often pathetic. The Civil War, the opening up of the West, the attractions of the cities and many other causes carried off the younger generation, but the old folks held on…Then, one sad November day, the stage turned in at the grass-grown farm road for the last passenger. With heavy heart she left the home of her love, of her life, of her children. One long farewell look: the coach door slammed: the farm was abandoned.
—William Ladd Taylor

Taylor searched extensively for a model for the stagecoach for this scene, finally spotting what he wanted from a train while passing a country station. Taylor's mother, Ana Maria Darling Taylor, posed as the farm's last resident.
